“Dream It, Achieve It”

"Dream It, Achieve It" was funded by a Jacqueline Robinson Grant from the Jack and Jill of America Foundation. During an eight week period, low income middle school and high school age children from Alexandria city participated in weekly workshops on topics such as overcoming obstacles, healthy nutrition, literacy, career choices. The program exposed the children to a variety of career choices, leadership skills, and goal strategies. It also instilled cultural appreciation in the children. The program culminated in ceremony which celebrated the children's aspirations.

Joint Legislative Summit

Our Joint Legislative Summit won second place Legislative award at National Convention and first place in Eastern Region for Legislative Advocacy. During this event, 72 mothers, fathers, teens and children convened at the Virginia State Capitol for a Joint Legislative Summit to raise awareness of the importance and impact of high-quality early childhood education and childcare for all children in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Jack and Jill families visited with legislators and newly installed Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. The children and teens had a unique opportunity to question legislators. The Alexandria-Mount Vernon Chapter was joined by its sister chapters in Northern Virginia as part of this national legislative initiative.
